YMAD 's Concept
YMAD’s concept is based on establishing community based waste entrepreneurs and building recycling hubs for the waste entrepreneurs to operate the waste business in. Through the establishment of Recycling Hubs and the training of local waste champions, YMAD will empower local communities – and the youth in those communities in particular – to act as custodians of the waste recycling hubs and their holistic environment. In other words, the proposed projects will put thrust on conservation and environmental protection of wetlands, rivers and protected biodiversity adjacent to or within the vicinity of project areas, as there is huge exposure to different forms of devastating environmental degradation. In the process, green livelihoods opportunities will be opened up.
Our Vision
YMAD’s vision is of a community of empowered individuals who can self-organise and recycle solid waste, improving the natural ecosystem and living conditions at the same time. In fact, the separation of recycled or general waste at source (from households and businesses) is an essential step to adopting a behavioural change of the disposal of waste into the correct waste categorized bin or bag used by recycling team. In line with the Republic of South Africa’s National Waste Management Strategy 2020, YMAD NPO has adopted the performance target of 70% waste diversion from the landfills near the communities we work in, by 2030, in addition to help reduce the carbon emissions by 45%, globally.
