Social Impact
YMAD seeks to address the negative environmental consequences of poor waste management in 5 informal settlements and townships near Pietermaritzburg in Kwa-Zulu Natal. Through the establishment of Recycling Hubs and the training of local waste champions, YMAD will empower local communities–and the youth in those communities in particular – to act as custodians of the rivers and wetlands in their
environment.

Our Communities
YMAD is responding to waste management challenges which are resulting in pollution and environmental health concerns in 5 different areas in and around Pietermaritzburg. The way in which these challenges manifest is shaped by the history, context and location of each settlement so differs slightly from place to place, although the overarching issues are common. In order to contextualize the proposed project, below we give a high level overview of each of the 5 sites.

Khan Road informal settlement
The Khan Road informal settlement has approximately +148 households and located in Pietermaritzburg within the Raisethorpe area..

Muslim and Indian Community
The Mountain Rise Informal settlement is located close to affluent Indian communities, many of which are business leaders in the Willowton Industrial area

Sobantu Township
The Sobantu Township has 1948 households and is predominantly black, in addition to being one of the oldest townships in Pietermaritzburg. Sobantu falls within the Msunduzi Local Municipality.

KwaXimba community
The KwaXimba community has 5 710 households and is located near the Cato Ridge area within Ward 1 of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality in which one of the boiling issues is the mismanaged dumpsites.

Lidgetton West Township
Lidgetton West township has a total of 1567 households and is located in Howick, not only within a tourist attraction area but within commercial farms, which are covered by approximately 2000 km2 of protected and conserved area.

Molwemi Township
The Molweni Waste team is located with the Molweni township, of which was previously occupied by farmlands, of which got turned into a residential area, located at western Ethekweni Municipality, within Durban.
