About Molweni Township

The Molweni Waste team is located with the Molweni township, of which was previously occupied by farmlands, of which got turned into a residential area, located at western Ethekweni Municipality, within Durban. The meaning of ‘Molweni’ is Xhosa and is a general greeting, ‘hello’. However, the area is famous for crime, unemployed youth and illegal waste dumping sites remain the biggest problem, of which has affected the Inanda River and Dam, of which most tributaries and stormwater drainages run off to.

How the Molweni Project Started?

The Molweni Waste team was founded by Colleen Mncwabe as a response to the 2022 floods, the centre serves to keep the area of Molweni clean by collecting recyclables from the community.

How is YMAD Helping the Molwemi Township?

The project has led to a fully functioning recycling centre with 18 waste pickers who collect waste, not only in the Molweni area but in Waterfall and Crestholme.
