The KwaXimba community has 5 710 households and is located near the Cato Ridge area within Ward 1 of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality in which one of the boiling issues is the mismanaged dumpsites (landfills).
The Issue
Because waste management is one of the eThekwini Municipality’s biggest public service backlogs in the KwaXimba area, this has resulted in most households burning waste or creating pits as dumping holes. There is also a rise in illegal dumping in the absence of waste collection by the municipality as required.
How is YMAD Helping KwaXimba Semi-Rural?
YMAD has been working on and off with the KwaXimba community since 2018 and as a solution to the illegal dumping within the area, we have been cleaning up five illegal dumping spots located by tributary rivers that feed into the uMsunduzi River. These areas are also in close proximity to some recognised wetlands. We are working towards the establishment of recycling hubs at each of these five sites (marked in red in the picture below).
